A little about us…

Pets In The City is a pet behaviour and training company owned by Jo Wriglesworth. The company is based in Warrington but behaviour referrals are delivered throughout Cheshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

Jo Wriglesworth said:

I started this company in 2007, two years after I finished my Masters Degree at Edinburgh in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare. Animal welfare is my passion, and I really wanted to provide a service to pet owners that would deliver excellent results in training and behaviour management, without the use of force or aggression. It simply isn’t necessary to intimidate an animal into submission through fear when kind and positive methods work well and will not injure or frighten your pet.

I joined the network of Puppy School tutors because they deliver outstanding results with kind methods and before I started my own family I taught puppy classes four nights a week in Warrington, Stockport and Northwich. In any week I could work with up to 50 different puppies, all in small groups, and all with reward based methods, so I became quite an expert in puppy behaviour and training!

Our Birth

The company was created in 2007 by Jo Wriglesworth after becoming the Puppy School  franchise holder for Stockport and South Manchester. The company was started in Manchester, hence the name Pets In The City. We offered puppy training and pet behaviour counselling.

2008

One Year Later

Pets In The City moved from Manchester to Warrington and expanded the coverage of Puppy School by providing classes in Stockport and Warrington areas. We also started to offer training classes for adult dogs

2010

Three years later

During 2010 Pets In The City expanded its Puppy School classes to include Northwich. Jo also became a full member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors after a rigorous assessment procedure. This meant that she was approved by insurance companies for reimbursement of pet behaviour fees.

2012

The bark of the park!

During 2010 we had to suspend the provision of the Northwich and Stockport classes due to family commitments in the evenings but we continued to run very successful classes in Warrington. Pets In the City continued to work all over Cheshire and Lancashire to offer behaviour consultations to dog and cat owners. We also started to offer canine assessments to welfare associations and social services.

2013

Help arrives!

This year we took on our first trainee to become a Puppy School tutor. Debbie Taylor has been assisting Jo in Puppy School Warrington and Northwich and we are delighted that she has completed her training and is a fully fledged tutor! Debbie now teaches our Northwich class

2015
Jacki

What a busy year! Jo became approved as a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) and also took on the roll of Puppy School Regional Manager. We also met Jacki Tinning who assists us at our Stockton Heath class and started her on her journey to becoming a Puppy School tutor

Debbie Taylor

Puppy School tutor

Debbie has taught in our Northwich classes for almost three years now and is a fantastic Puppy School tutor! She was personally trained by Gwen Bailey, author of the best selling The Perfect Puppy. Debbie works in a busy veterinary surgery and her favourite breed is the French Bulldog! Debbie really enjoys helping puppies on their training journey in our Northwich class and our clients love her friendly approachable manner.

Referrals

We work on referral from veterinary practices as behaviour problems require a holistic approach and sometimes medical issues need to be resolved in order for behaviour counselling to be successful.

If you are a veterinary surgery and would like information on how to refer clients to me please get in touch here. We are based in Warrington but will travel up to approximately an hour away and have had referrals from as far away as Blackpool, Buxton, Stoke and Liverpool. We see dog, cats and rabbits for behaviour consultations.

We conduct fostering and adoption assessments of dogs for social services. Please enquire if you are interested in this service.

We also conduct behaviour and temperament assessments for the RSPCA. Please enquire if you are a rescue organisation and you would like an assessment of one of the animals in your care.

The RSPCA recommend that owners who are experiencing behaviour problems with their pets consult with a properly qualified behaviourist and they recommend only members of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors. If you are an owner of a rescued pet who is struggling with a behaviour problem please ask for help before returning your pet to the rescue centre.
